A team of our Junior Flyers made the long journey down to South Wales to compete in the Snowsports Wales Champery Slalom and Excel competitions at Pembrey ski slope over the weekend.
The team had an opportunity to practise on the slope through slalom poles on the Friday evening and to admire the wonderful views offered from the top of this picturesque ski slope set in the Pembrey Country Park.
The racing started early on Saturday morning and the standard of racing was high with many of the Welsh National Ski Team in attendance. The race format gave the under 12 category racers the chance to compete in 2 races on Saturday. Rufus Littlejohn was silky smooth on his skis taking gold in both races. Izzy Shaw put down 4 fast runs, which gave her two 4th places in a very strong girls U12 category.
In the U14 category Cameron Shaw came in a commendable 6th and earned a top 20 finish overall. In the U16 category Tom Bromley skied smoothly on the first run before making an error at the very last gate and being disqualified.
On Saturday evening the Flyers represented the North Wales Snowsports Club in the Team dual slalom. The competition put the team up against teams from West Wales Ski Club, Cardiff Ski Club and Aldershot Ski Club all of whom had numerous teams entered. The team received a bye into the second round where they suffered a heavy loss at the hands of a strong Aldershot B team. The early exit from the competition gave the Flyers the opportunity to explore the forest and the huge expanse of beach at Pembrey Country Park. A great end to a hard days racing.
Sunday saw the Flyers take part in a three run race which gave the older competitors the chance to earn some seed points. This was a great opportunity for 2 of our Flyers to earn their first points and therefore get better start numbers at the next competition they take part in. Cameron Shaw came away with 232 seed points and Tom Bromley gained 265 seed points. Well done boys.
Special thanks go to Joe and Ben Constantine and their father Paul for the help they gave the team, passing on their wealth of experience to us all whilst inspecting the courses and preparing skis, and to Snowsports Wales for this fantastically organised event.
The weekend was a great introduction to ski racing for our Junior Flyers and they all did North Wales Snowsports Club proud. They all came away having learnt lessons and with a passion to improve their performances at the next event. With lure of the stunning setting and the prospect of topping up with a Llanelli suntan, we will all be back next year to try again.
