Newsletter Christmas 2014
It has been two months since the slope at PYB re-opened and things are going extremely well. To give club members an insight of all the work that has been going on here is some background on the ski slope project.
The Plas y Brenin complex is owned by Sport England (SE) & operated by the Mountain Training Trust (MTT). By March 2012, SE & MTT decided that the slope was not needed & the cost of repair & operation were not justified by the level of use.
After the slope closed, NWSC members campaigned for the slope to be re-opened and the younger club members camped out, on some of the coldest nights in Capel Curig as a protest. Their efforts secured a meeting with Sports England.
After a lot of work, meetings and consultation with the relevant parties it was decided to try a pilot of 12 months to prove the slope was needed.
There has been £60k of repairs to ensure the ensure Health & Safety of the slope.
Alone NWSC raised 8k and we received £17k from The Skiers Trust of GB. SE matched the NWSC £25k and a £60k refurbish was completed late September 2014.
The remaining £10k was 400 volunteer hours working on the slope. Food & accommodation provided for the ski mat contractor,Briton Engineering, was donated byThe Royal Oak for 1 week & The Tyn y Coed for 3 weeks. Several club members worked with the contractors to lay the mats for several days on end to complete the task.
Furthermore, SE have provided £10k for new equipment, boots, skis, helmets etc and they are providing some funds for MTT to operate the slope.
So, the slope is still owned by SE and operated by MTT. Gethin in the ski room is employed by MTT & all repairs, checks etc are managed by MTT.
The club sessions run on Mon, Tues, Sat & Sun, are organised by the club committee and staffed by a mixture of qualified & trainee instructors, plus some young volunteers.
The qualified instructors receive expenses (some donate their services to the club for free), Trainees instruct free as they require supervision hours on the slope.
We have 10 months remaining to prove that the slope is needed, and can be a viable part of PYB.
NWSC are a Stakeholder Partner in this 1 year project and our main function is to publicise the slope. As a club member, you can provide an invaluable service by spreading the word, to schools, colleges, friends, ANYBODY, through social media & placing posters in leisure centres, libraries etc and in any free press in your area.
If you would like your local school to ski, the costs are £50 for up to a group of 10 including an instructor. You will need to book direct with Plas y Brenin 01690 720214
Any other non school groups such as scouts, young farmers, social groups etc £70
OPEN PRACTICE – if you want to keep up your skill level, go along and practice your techniques. This is for skiers who can turn, stop & use the tow safely. 14yrs and over can be unsupervised. Under 14's must have adult supervision (off slope is adequate)
IN SHORT – WE USE IT OR LOSE IT!!!!
IN ADDITION, if you are attending a club session, money spent in the bar at PYB will help the business plan to keep the slope open. It's really important if you make a purchase of food & drink etc, you make it clear you're a slope user so that it can be recorded accurately. Spend has to be put through their SLOPE USER BUTTON on the till.
